Inter Parish Youth Group:
Our group is comprised of a Junior (grades 6th-8th) and a Senior group (grades 9th-12th) from two Episcopal churches in the Bergen County area, St John’s Ramsey and Trinity Allendale. The group began in July of 2013. Combined, we have about 42 youth within this age range and our event attendance grows each time.
The goal for the group is to establish and maintain a welcoming and cohesive group of all three churches where the youth feel comfortable in being themselves and enjoy each other’s company while we share our common beliefs in Christ and live out his word through how we treat each other and helping others in and outside of our communities.
This group is lead and organized by Megan Kendall our Youth Missioner who spends at least one Sunday a month at each church where she can spend time and get to know each group and their families individually while also planning activities for the group as a whole.
We have established an Inter Parish Youth Council that consists of one representative from each church for each age group as well as one parent representative from each church. We meet monthly to create goals and plan events.
We have monthly meetings for each age group as well as one or two events per month. We started with a Mission Trip in July at Crossroads Retreat Center. Each day was filled with missionary work including helping the camp recover from storm damage, packing over 10,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now, packing up meals for St James’ Episcopal church for their Summer Back Pack Program and spending our last day at Haven of Hope, entertaining and barbecuing with two families who have children with life threatening diseases. As a way for our congregations and other youth to be introduced, we presented a documentary video of our trip to each church showing our mission work as well as the fun we had together!
We have had a progressive dinner where all of the youth got to visit each church for a part of a meal, apple picking at an orchard in NY, a Minecraft Tournament where churches were “built” and have supported various outreach projects including the St Paul’s Men’s Shelter where we prepared, served and shared a meal and conversation with the residents.
Our future plans consist of events for community service while fundraising to help support our next Mission Trip. We look forward to church Lock Ins, Diocesan youth events, supporting our confirmands, assisting each church’s various outreach projects all the while having fun sharing in our faith!
