About Bishop Beckwith
The tenth Bishop of Newark since his consecration in January 2007, Bishop Beckwith has served on the Episcopal Church Standing Committee on Stewardship, the Board of the Episcopal Service Corps and on the current Chair of the Liberian Covenant Committee for the Episcopal Church. On the national level, he co-founded and chairs Bishops United Against Gun Violence and is currently the Co-Chair of the statewide New Jersey Interfaith Coalition.
A 1973 graduate of Amherst College and a 1978 graduate of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, Mark then spent two years teaching at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan as the Amherst College Fellow. He subsequently served as Associate Rector of St. Peter’s Church, Morristown and Rector of Christ Church, Hackensack. Before returning to the Diocese of Newark as Bishop, he spent 14 years as Rector of All Saints Church in Worcester, MA. Deeply committed to urban ministry, Mark has initiated homeless programs and soup kitchens in each congregation he has served. For six years, Mark was a Conference leader for CREDO.
Mark has been married to Marilyn Olson since 1982 and they have two adult children. His allegiance to the Red Sox nation has never wavered. His favorite benediction:
May God give you grace never to sell yourself short. Grace to risk something big
for something good. Grace to remember that the world is now too dangerous for
anything but truth, and too small for anything but love. – William Sloan Coffin
